Description

One circle, one sky and a few words. A weather app I first made in 2016 and rebuilt ten years later, keeping the same idea.

Short read

In 2016, I made Timecast, a weather app with no icons and no photos. The weather was a picture: one circle for the sun or moon, a sky coloured by temperature and time of day, and rain or snow drawn as particles. The idea held up for ten years and the build didn't — jQuery, hundreds of divs, an API key in the code, wind left as a todo. In 2026 I rebuilt it as Huecast, keeping the idea and the original colours. The two colour scales are now blended in OKLCH instead of jumping between buckets, the weather is drawn from measured amounts (mm of rain, cm of snow, metres of visibility, km/h of wind) instead of a weather code, and a 24-hour timeline lets you drag through the day and watch the sky change hour by hour. No server, no account, no tracking, and it works offline.
